January Meeting

H&DAS is kicking the year off with a bit of business and a bit of fun!
January is our elections month, so we will be taking a few minutes during the meeting to confirm our executive for the upcoming year.
In place of a traditional speaker, Jessica will be running a Wabi Kusa soil ball workshop! Save your plant trimmings, as we’ll be planting cuttings into pre-made substrate balls to grow out of the aquarium. Members will be supplied with materials but extra cuttings are most welcome and will help spice up the mix! Don’t forget to bring taper point tweezers if you have them, and your glasses if you need them! Youll need a display container at home – large jars, vases, terrariums etc all work.
Doors open at 7pm for set-up, meeting begins 7:30pm.
We meet downstairs at the Church of the Resurrection, 435 Mohawk Rd W, Hamilton, ON L9C 1X1
Our meeting will have the usual members draw, raffle table, donutfish, and a mini auction.
*** President Mike will be bringing a magical mystery box to test your fishy knowledge! Will it be fish? A Plant? An Invertebrate? Remember to bring your thinking caps!
Guests are welcome to come and check out a meeting for free!
Suitable plants to bring:
Most stem plants (Hygrophila, Ludwigia, Hydrocotyl, etc)
Rosette plants (small Cryptocoryne)
Bolbitis ferns
Mosses

True aquatic plants such as Hornwort, Vallisneria and Blyxa are not suitable for Wabi Kusa.

President’s Message November

Hi Everyone!
Thank you Bob Wright for your program in October on your adventures at the Georgia Aquarium. Makes me want to take an Aquarium visit soon! I’m going to New Orleans in November so…..you just never know.
Our November program is really special.
Art Comisso will be giving a live aquascaping demonstration. Exciting! Art will be bringing a 9 gallon rimless Seapora Crystal aquarium with a stylish Tropica LED light and CO2 kit by CO2ART. He will complete the aquascape using plants, substrate, and hardscape from Tropica Aquarium Plants. The completed tank, worth over $700, will be auctioned off at the meeting with all proceeds going to “Neighbour to Neighbour”!
Our December Holiday program includes games by Noel, pizza and wings. A snack or dessert to share is always welcome if you feel like sharing. Sarah will put together a “fishy” table raffle with all items donated by members and guests. We ask that everyone attending the meeting bring a non perishable item or 2 for our “Neighbour to Neighbour” Food Drive.
It will be a feel good evening.
Club elections take place in January. Please let a member of the executive know if you’re interested in helping out.
Hope you all enjoy the meeting!
Carla

President’s Message April

Hi Everyone,
What is happening with this weather? I thought we were celebrating Spring as we had a very successful Spring Show and Auction on Saturday, March 24th. A huge Thank You to everyone for helping out! It takes so many helpers and it is very much appreciated. The monies raised through our events help to support our speakers and monthly club activities. If you have a program idea please let us know.

Our program for April is the Home Show. I know that the judges – Charlie, Peter and Frank had a great time visiting those that entered the Show and Jessica enjoyed recording moments of your tanks to share with the club. I can’t wait to see all the different aquariums!
As spectators on Thursday we all get to pick our favourite tank and vote for the “People’s Choice” Award. Exciting!

The CAOAC Convention is quickly approaching May 18 th through 20th at the Burlington Holiday Inn. All the speaker info and activities can be found on the CAOAC site. If you haven’t purchased your weekend ticket I would suggest you do so as the price of the ticket is only $85 until April 20 ($100 after April 20). Our club has been asked to organize the Auction on Sunday May 20. Come on out and support CAOAC and all clubs.

Hope to see you on Thursday,

Carla
